HISTORY OF DEVIL'S ROCK

Devil's Rock, located beween Martineau Bay and Haileybury, is a cliff that allows outdoor enthusiasts a spectacular bird's eye view of Lake Temiskaming as well as the province of Quebec.  The rock, dated to be 2 220 million years old, rises 365 feet above water level with an equal depth below.  FRom the lake, you can see the scars of mining tunnels that had been chisselled into the cliff when prospectors drilled exploration drifts from the ice on the lake into the rock face during the 1903-1907 silver boom in nearby Cobalt.

The original name for Devil's Rock, was "Manidoo-Wabikong" or taranslated to English, "Spirit Rock".  The name was given by the local Algonquin First Nation People.  The First Nation People believed that Manidoo is the guardian of Lake Temiskaming and needs to be respected.  Manidoo is also related to Thunderbird, which is very sacred to many First Nation People across Canada.

The early Frist Nation People, as well as fur traders, left an offering of tobacco at Spirit Rock to appease the Sprit Manidoo when they travelled upon the waters of Lake Temiskaming.  It is believed that Manidoo controls the weather around Lake Temiskaming.

When the Christian missionaries came to the area with the early settlers, they changed the name from Spirit Rock to Devil's Rock to reflect the Christian beliefs that the religion of the First nation People was of the Devil.  Devil's Rock has been known as such to our present day.

Devil's Rock also has ties with Leslie MacFarlane, famous son of Haileybury and one of Canada's most prolific writers.  He was a ghost writer who wrote the Hardy Boys series under the pen name of Franklin W. Dixon.  Many of the books were written in Haileybury using both local landmarks and people.  Devil's Rock is claimed to be the setting for Leslie McFarlane's Hardy Boys' "The House on the Cliff"
